How fast does your internet connection need to be to use VOIP with min problems?
I have DSL that 1.5mbs.
Is that fast enought to use VOIP and not run into alot of problems. I know you would have to be worried about both your up and down speeds. I have heard some say VOIP works great while others say that the service drops their calls or that they have poor quality. I am thinking about using VOIP to add an additional phone line to my small business so that I can call out for free as well in the US. Can I rely of the service or should I stick with a traditional land line? Also does anyone know of a cheap landline long distance placn?

quality of your voip is about many factors, some of it out of your control (Carrier Voip equipment, carrier bandwidth, quality of route (Grey or premium)and many other things. As far as you. 1.5 mbs is more that enough to run a (or many voip calls,) what you can do to give your best chance of quality, 1. dont download torrents or youtube while on call, Use a dialer that user G729 codec (G729 uses 16kbs per sec, where g711 uses 128kbs per call) NOTE xlite is only G711 grade, use eyebeam, Bria has G729 but has a cost for dialer. Some suppliers will offer Free G729 dialers (as we do)
Also avoid shonky voip carriers, Setup for a carrier can cost $100,000s on setup but a newbe trying to cash in can also do it for $500. Do some forums searchers. Also being the key one is Cheap is not always better.
Other things is you should consider is how do you pay them, some have weird payment and amount terms..
Hope this info helps.
We can give you a voip account at with a $2 test start up just check our site attached…

I think that should be enough. I have had VOIP for last 3 years, initially I had few issues but now since the networks quality has improved, it is much better.

256 kbps (not mbps, no such thing yet) will do it. Anything above that and you can use the computer on the Internet while on the VoIP phone and have no drop outs.
My VoIP phone is as clear as my land line, even when talking to people in Europe (can talk to 17 countries over there free)

i have experience using VoIP stuff like skype/yahoo messenger using dialup connection at 56kpbs… if dont do anything, just voip, pretty smooth crystal clear voice.. nowadays… broadband speed are much2 better, so there’s no problem i guest.. but, if calling terminated to mobile numbers, maybe lots of echo/noise…
